This Weeks Restaurant Review
By Jim and Diane

Everyone in America is Irish around St. Patrick ’s Day. After attending the St. Patrick’s Day parade in downtown Rochester on Saturday, my wife Diane and I had heard about an Irish Pub in Spencerport called McColley’s, located at 89 South Union Street, and decided to give it a try.

Wow, we actually were seated as we walked in! McColley’s is an Irish theme restaurant with a full bar. Soon after we arrived all of the tables became full and people were standing at the bar waiting for a table. It appears they had recently remodeled the seating area with wood beams and ceiling boards which were white washed to look older. I found it to be delightful and comfortable. Diane is always yelling at me to “stop inspecting”. I'm always looking up to see what a particular building is made of.

The tables and booths were close together, which sometimes can be annoying, however we immediately began talking with the folks next to us and one lady with red hair actually got mad at me for saying the guy across from her wearing a giant green wig looked more Irish than she did. It was a very fun party atmosphere and we enjoyed ourselves immensely.

I ordered a Newcastle beer, which is one of my favorites and a main stay on draft for most Irish pubs. I was a bit disappointed when our waitress brought a bottled Newcastle, instead of a draught, My fault, I should have asked. Diane had her favorite, a glass of Pinot Grigio, which was great! Of course I can never have just one great beer and for the next one it was a draught Guinness!

McColley’s had a reduced menu for the St. Patrick’s weekend celebration. Diane had the beef stew, which she loved and more importantly the accompanying bread was perfect! Usually I have to help graze off the rest of her meal, not today!

I had an appetizer called Ruben Fritters, which are made of fresh roasted brisket, cream cheese and pickle, pan fried and baked after being coated with Panko, then served with a 1000 Island sauce for dipping. Wow, they were great!

Our waitress was great, very friendly, and there was plenty of help to wait on tables. Our meal was delivered to us in about 20 minutes, a bit long, but we were so into the atmosphere that it didn't matter.

A good time was had by all! We both agreed we would go back again!! And on a side note, there were no leftovers for Wishbone!
