Rotary Club’s Next Drive-thru Food Drive is Nov. 1

The Rotary Club of Pittsford’s next drive-thru food drive is scheduled Saturday (Nov.1) from 9 am to noon at the Pittsford Sutherland High School bus loop. Donations will support the Pittsford Food Cupboard and the Nazareth University Oak Tree Food Pantry. Toiletries and household cleaning products also will be accepted for Angels of Mercy New York. Rotarians and Interact Club members will be collecting at the drive rain or shine.

The Pittsford Food Cupboard plays a crucial role in addressing food insecurity within our community. Donations help ensure that local families have access to essential food items and will promote well-being and stability. See the cupboard’s list of current needs.

Angels of Mercy New York is a non-profit organization in Rochester that educates, protects, and empowers women and girls facing domestic violence, human trafficking, and other life-controlling issues.

The Oak Tree Pantry serves those with food insecurity in the Nazareth community. The pantry has an ongoing need for granola bars, pasta, peanut butter, soap and other hygiene products.

The drive also will collect donations of gently used, current magazines for distribution to area human service organizations. The club conducts the drives the first Saturday of the month all year with an occasional change of date to avoid holiday and event conflicts.

Keep your pets safe on Halloween

It's cute to see the kids trick or treating in all the costumes! However, it's scary for pets. They don't understand what's going on. Doorbell ringing constantly, knocks on the door, strange looking people showing up. Cats usually will run and sometimes right out the door. Dogs will bark, they're protecting their people and their home, it's what they should do! Help them out. Put the cats in an enclosed room temporarily so they feel safe with their food, toys, litter. For the dogs they need to see what's happening, locking them up in a room will only cause more anxiety. Set up a dog gate that keeps them away from the door but they can still see that their people are ok, and the treaters are safe from the dog. Also, have food, water, some toys and their bed in the room with them. Whatever you do, don't yell at your dog for barking at strangers. You are their person, they're protecting you.

ATTENTION PENFIELD RESIDENTS

You may have noticed or heard of some geothermal drilling happening recently, and perhaps even caught a whiff of something unusual in the air. While that wasn't an ACES project, we want to clear up why this happens and how we handle it.

?FLX Geology 101: The Finger Lakes region is rich with sedimentary rocks like shale, limestone, and sandstone, but underneath, there are natural voids (cavities formed by erosion and rock dissolution). Sometimes, these voids trap methane pockets, causing a temporary release of gas. While the smell can be unpleasant, it's not harmful to the public, and fire departments are often called to assess the situation. It's all part of the process!

?How We Prevent: At ACES, we take extra care to review the geology of each site using publicly available data, and our own personal log of drilling results nearby before starting. In Penfield and Brighton, for example, we typically drill to 150 feet. Beyond 150' we've found voids more consistently. Over the last 15 years, we've partnered with local municipalities to refine geothermal permitting practices to ensure our projects are safe and successful.

*It's unfortunate when geothermal projects go awry, often due to installers skipping essential permits or failing to plan for the local geology. When this happens, it not only puts the project at risk but also gives geothermal energy a bad reputation.

We're winding down but the weather has been decent to say the least! Quite dry however, the weeds continue to grow. It's very, very, very important to have a home inspection on a house you're looking to buy. But we know, that basically you're encouraged not to get one "if you want this house". Serious red flags all around, but that's how it's been for quite a few years now. Not at all to benefit - you - the homebuyer. You find that you end up paying too much for that house and once you move in you discover issues. Some problems are obvious, some not. A home inspection, even after moving in, is important. Knowing what's going on is smart. A home inspection will give you a lot of information, for example, the condition of the roof, furnace, why is there moisture in the basement, and so much more. At least you will know. If Jim Salmon does the home inspection, he talks with you about prioritizing what should be tackled first, etc., approximate costs for repairs or replacements, not to scare you, just inform.
