May brings on new things! More Sunshine! Flowers blooming! Grass is green and growing! You want to be outside more! Finally after such a long winter we are ready! In Upstate & Western New York we have such a short summer we usually cram as much as possible in it. Seems like we run out of time before it's gone!

There are a lot of great things to do and take advantage of visiting our beautiful state, hiking, waterfalls, zoos and animal parks, water sports, boating, camping, explore and have fun!

Then there's home repair projects and yard work! Because we are afterall, a home repair newsletter! You are faithful listeners of the Home Repair Clinic with Jim Salmon & John Welch as well as their guests! The first thing is to walk around your house and yard, note what needs done and prioritize. Jim Salmon & John Welch truly believe in young people learning trades, whether it is in construction, welding, landscaping, electrical, plumbing, you get the idea. Therefore, The Salmon Children's Foundation has been giving out $1000 scholarships to high school seniors for the past few years, and is doing so this year. THE SALMON CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION 2025 SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE TRADES

It is so important no matter what time of the year, that your home is properly insulated. If you have blown in or fiberglas, chances are it is no longer effective. Over time it compresses the layers, especially if it gets wet, then it's just not doing the job it's suppose to. Jim has a new rescue dog, Willie, (actually his name changes frequently!) Apparently at one point of rescue he was called Wally, then he was adopted and his name was changed to Willie. You've most likely heard Jim brag about his new woodworking shop being built by SL Custom Construction. This year's weather hasn't been good to work outdoors, however they did the best they could! Rotary Club’s Next Drive-thru Food Drive is April 5

The Rotary Club of Pittsford’s next drive-thru food drive is scheduled Saturday (April 5) from 9 am to noon at the Pittsford Sutherland High School bus loop. In addition to the Pittsford Food Cupboard, donations also will support Joseph’s Place and the Nazareth University Oak Tree Food Pantry. Rotarians and Interact Club members will be collecting at the drive rain or shine.

The Pittsford Food Cupboard plays a crucial role in addressing food insecurity within our community. Donations help ensure that local families have access to essential food items and will promote well-being and stability. Though all food items are needed, the cupboard’s most needed current items are cereal; spaghetti sauce and pasta; hearty soups, chili or stew; meals in a can (pasta and meat); tuna, chicken or other canned meat; dish soap; and bathroom tissue. The cupboard also maintains a list of current needs.

Joseph’s Place is small food pantry serving residents living in the Cathedral neighborhood of Rochester who experience food insecurity. The pantry operates on an all volunteer staff.

The Oak Tree Pantry serves those with food insecurity in the Nazareth community. The pantry has an ongoing need for granola bars, pasta, peanut butter, soap and other hygiene products.

The drive also will collect donations of gently used, current magazines for distribution to area human service organizations.

April 1st! Jokes or not? How about not getting a home inspection when you should've.

During these past few years, thanks to the whole pandemic mess, homebuyers were 'pretty much talked out' of getting home inspections. Well, guess what? Once they did close, and moved in, homeowners were finding all kinds of problems with the house. So now they're in a real dilemma, they ended up in a bidding war to get the house so were over-extended with any monies they saved up and a sky high mortgage payment. Therefore, finding problems that are going to cost a lot of money to repair or replace, and there's no money left. Many of these issues are unsafe. A home inspection by Jim Salmon would have found a lot of these problems and added a value to repairs so the buyer would be well informed.

Since the market is slowly starting to change, be sure to get a home inspection before you finalyze the purchase. Even if problems are found at least knowing about them is so important, especially financially.

One quick story, someone put in an offer on a house out of state, sight unseen, except for pictures the realtor put in an ad. So Jim goes out of state to inspect this house. So many things were wrong. The actual description of the type of build of the house was incorrect, there was evidence previous high water levels inside, amatuer patching of exterior damage, rotting wood, old mechanics, shared systems, and on and on. Offer was pulled, the repair costs would have been over $100,000.00! Isn't that crazy? Be smart, be informed before spending THE MOST MONEY in your life!
